-
- Actually, (and you probably already know this), QND and most of the
- other QN's are already in use. QND is frequently used on Amateur
- Radio traffic networks to indicate the fact that the net is now
- directed.
-
- How about "QIB", which would presumably mean "operating in the buff" ??
-
- Too bad QRS is already in such wide use. It could dual as "Ready

-
- Good news again!!!
-
- Last saturday, june 25th we had another Es opening to the States
- into Holland. Apart from the 'standard' southern europeans the opening
- ran into Scandinavia as well. Signals were not so loud, approx. in the
- 55 range. One of the highlights was WB4NFS/P/VP9 (!!!!!) which was
- DXCC #108 for me. During this weekend apperantly a fieldday-contest
- was held. Despite to that fact activity was low. The opening was
- mainly to the 4-district. To our (i.e. the 50 MHz DX incrowd in the
- Netherlands) surprise the opening lasted the whole evening and started
- at approx. 1700 UTC. The station which was the most in the picture
- was KJ4E (EL98) whos signal sometimes peaked to S9. Although I worked
- several stations from the 4-district during previous F2 openings I
- managed to work some new grids. Stations worked by me:
- N4EJV (EL97), KJ4E (EL98), N4EJW (EL97), K2OU/4 (EL87), NT4B (EL89),
- W4WHK (EM90), K4SC (EL98), WA4CHA (EL88), WB4NFS/P/VP9 (FM72), K4FA (EL96).
-
- At approx. 2130 UTC the opening ran into the 1 and 2-district but signals
- were significantly weaker (53-range). I worked: W1WHL (FN31), W3IWU (FN20),
- WZ1V (FN31), K2SMN (FN20) and W3EP (FN31).
-
- Stations heard by me (despite I called them): KC4SUS (EL95, could have
- been a new grid for me), W5HUQ/4, W4OO (EL96), NU4Q, W1AW.
-
- Fortunately most of the stations realized that there was an opening
- towards Europe going on. Unfortunately some stations hadn't the
- faintest idea like WC2G. I believe his score should have been signi-
- ficantly improved if they were able to hear the huge european pile-up
- for them. Instead of making QSOs we could clearly hear the BBQ
- and the loads and loads of beer being poured into the operators mouth :-)
-
- After approx. 2200 UTC signals disappeared.

- W1AJR, NW3C, VE3TFU, WW4J (?), K1HTV. These stations were worked
- between 19.49 and 20.19 UTC. After this opening another small one
- reoccured and I worked N1DJB, K1TOL and WA1AYS (from 21.47 to 22.03 UTC)

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Good morning. It's Sunday the 26th of June and here is the GB2RS news
- broadcast, prepared by the Radio Society of Great Britain.
-
- First the headlines:-
-
- The first 10GHz moonbounce contact between two British stations has
- taken place,
-
- July RadCom has been posted,
-
- Sporadic E has dominated the higher bands this week - and there's more
- to come, and
-
- RSGB Past President Len Newnham, G6NZ has died.
-
- The first 10GHz moonbounce contact between two 'G' stations took place
- at 2340 last Sunday the 19th of June, when G4RFR in Wimborne, Dorset
- worked G3WDG in Rushden, Northants. Good reports were exchanged and both
- stations were able to hear their own echoes. G4RFR is the club station
- of the Flight Refuelling Amateur Radio Society. The moonbounce system
- was built by members as a club project, and was operated by G0API,
- G3YGF, G6NLC, G4JNT and G0DQQ. It comprised a 12 foot dish, a 15 watt
- transmitter and a 2dB noise figure system. G3WDG's station was operated
- by Charlie, G3WDG and Petra, G4KGC, and comprised a 3 metre dish, a 40
- watt transmitter and a 1.2dB noise figure system. The G4RFR EME station
- will be on display at the Flight Refuelling Hamfest on Sunday the 14th
- of August.
-
- The July edition of Radio Communication has been posted to all RSGB
- members. This month's RadCom includes a full list of QSL Bureau
- sub-managers.
-
- The Radio Society of Great Britain was represented at the funeral of Len
- Newnham, G6NZ, which took place last Friday. Len, who died on Saturday
- the 18th, aged 89, was President of the RSGB in 1958. He was renowned
- for his collection of historic radio equipment, much of which was
- exhibited to the public from time to time on HMS Warrior. Further
- details of Len's contribution to amateur radio will appear in the August
- edition of Radio Communication.
-
- Morse Tests will be available on demand during the Hamfest-UK rally next
- weekend. Tests are available from 10.20am to 4pm daily. Candidates are
- reminded that they need to provide two passport-type photographs,
- together with the necessary fee, paid by either a cheque or postal
- orders but not cash. We have full details of Hamfest-UK later in this
- bulletin.
-
- The Wells, Somerset, two metre repeater GB3WR on R0, was closed down
- last Monday the 20th for repair work. Further details from the repeater
- keeper G0MBX, whose address is correct in the RSGB Call Book.
-
- The Buxton Two metre repeater GB3HH on R4, was taken off-air after a
- period of intermittent receiver operation. The keeper regrets any
- inconvenience until the problem is resolved and the repeater is
- reactivated. For further details regarding the repeater contact the
- keeper, G3RKL, whose address is correct in the RSGB Call Book.
-
- Now attention all amateurs living in the East Highland area of Scotland.
- The RSGB is looking for more Novice Instructors to cover the Inverness,
- Wick and Thurso areas. Anyone interested is requested to ask for the
- booklet 'Novice Licence Training Scheme', which contains the necessary
- details and an application form. Contact the Amateur Radio Department at
- RSGB Headquarters for your copy.
-
- Now some items of HF DX news from the weekly RSGB DX News Sheet which is
- edited by Brendan McCartney, G4DYO.

- I'm a non-electronic type person with no interest in ham radio except as it
- may or may not affect me or my family when practiced by others. My new

- difference in elevation, exactly on a level with my upstairs bedrooms, and

-
- And now the solar factual data:
-
- In these reports, the terms 'indices' and 'index' mean that the
- measurement has been made in accordance with internationally agreed
- standards. The 'mean' is the centre value between the highest and lowest
- level, and the 'average' is the addition of all the values divided by
- their number.
-
- The period from the 13th to the 19th of June saw the HF bands still
- affected by coronal hole magnetic activity and a decline in solar flux
- levels. However, this was offset by widespread sporadic E extending from
- Spain to the Ukraine, lasting up to 21.00 hours on some days, affecting
- particularly 10 and 6 metres.
-
- No flares have been reported, and the sunspot indices have generally
- declined; the period gave a mean of 58. The solar flux levels have also
- declined from 88 units on the 15th down to only 77 units by the 19th,
- giving an average for the period of 83 units. Solar flux levels have
- steadily declined from around the 120s last January down to the 80s now.
- This is a very steep fall and is partly responsible for the poorer than
- expected HF band conditions. The solar flux 90 day average on the 19th
- was 80 units.
-
- The geomagnetic Ap indices tended to rise slightly over the period and
- averaged 12.5 units, but overall this is quieter than of late. The 16th
- was very quiet at only 4 units, but was back up to 20 units again by the
- 19th. Northern stations have been most affected by the higher levels.
- The state has been 'nil, nothing to report' throughout the period.
-
- The aa indices, as supplied by the British Geological Survey for the 7th
- to the 13th of June, gave an average daily index of 28 nanoTeslas -
- about K3; the disturbed periods were around 59 nanoTeslas and the quiet
- ones down to 8. The X-Ray flux levels have continued to increase and
- averaged A9.1 units for the period, but reached B1.0 on the 15th and
- 16th - the highest levels since last March.
-
- I'll repeat the figures. Spots - 58; Flux - 83; Ap index - 12.5; X-ray
- flux - A9.1.
-
- Now the ionospheric data for Central France:
-
- The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Poitiers, as reported by Meudon,
- averaged 7.3MHz, hardly varying day to day. The darkness hour lows
- averaged 3.6MHz, but blanketing E was reported every day lasting up to 6
- hours on some days. The highs are now centred about 20.00 hours and the
- lows 04.00 hours.
-
- I'll repeat the figures. Highs - 7.3MHz; lows - 3.6MHz.
-
- Now the ionospheric data for the north:
-
- The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Ekaterinberg averaged 6.2MHz and
- the darkness hour lows 4.2MHz.
-
- I'll repeat the figures: Highs - 6.2MHz; lows - 4.2MHz.
-
- And lastly the solar forecast:
-
- This week the quiet side of the sun will be looking our way and solar
- flux levels are expected to be at about the 70s. Geomagnetic levels are
- expected to be disturbed at first, possibly up to substorm levels, then
- quietening by the end of the week to 'just unsettled'. F-layer MUFs in
- the south are expected to reach about 21MHz during daylight, and 14MHz
- during the darkness hours. North/south paths will be the best. Daylight
- sporadic-E is expected to be widespread particularly on 10 and 6 metres.
-
- And that's the end of the solar information.
-
-
- Finally in the main news, SSL has informed the Society that as of last
- Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns issued were in the G0 Uniform
- Yankee and G7 Sierra Kilo series, and Novice calls in the 2 0 Alpha
- India and 2 1 Delta Delta series.
